My specific topic for the historical investigation was the Women's Strike for Equality. I mainly picked this topic because I thought it was interesting to see Woman create a strike just for their rights and I wanted to learn more about the topic itself. Some basic facts about the strike is that it happened on August 26th 1970, and was mainly under the person; Betty Friedan. Betty Friedan was a major feminist, and had created the strike to help create the significance of women's rights within the United States. The strike itself had created women to come together, and they were all from many different races. The strike did not completely end women's inequality but it did help spread the message across the states. The main importance behind the strike is that doing this strike was a huge risk and doing it may have caused several complications with the government and such, but Betty Friedan and others did not give up and made sure to make this strike happen. It was important for this strike to happen because Women were not getting job opportunities and equality just in general. Overall, the women's strike for equality was a big step in helping women get their freedom.
This is an interesting topic for the investigation, and my topic coincidentally has some similarities. I did the Little Rock Nine, which were basically 9 young high school students that didn't give up in fighting for the fact that there should be no segregation in educational facilities. After fighting for years, they eventually got what they wanted and attended the school. I think we can relate to this too; if we don't give up on achieving something, we will surely be able to reach it or have some success at one point.
ReplyDeleteThe idea of persistence is one that has been a common trend in civil rights activists throughout history. We have seen that civil rights movements tend to adapt and strike with time; through prosperous times and through difficult times. Those who really want to change the world will do so through determination and hard work with the stubbornness of a mule. Without stamina and patience all causes and goals fade away into the past forgotten by the ever changing future.

ReplyDeleteTo answer your question Sophia, I believe that the USA has improved a lot compared to where women were then. Women back then did not have a lot of significance in society, and now we see many women standing up for their rights. There may be some discrimination today, but it was not as much as it was before.
ReplyDeleteIt seems that even after all the protests and movements that were held Women are still not equal to Men. Although, on the surface it may seem as though the two genders are equal, but as we dig deeper we can see that is not the case. Today a woman makes $.75 to ever $1 a man makes. That is not to say that last two centuries worth of effort is wasted. Those in the past worked and got Woman many of our basic freedoms. However, there is still work to do to have Men and Woman truly be equal.
